So this was at a police auction in Illinois, said to be confiscated from drug trade. The following are pics someone posted from a local car spotting group. It was said to be sold for $17.7k. Impressive stuff. But it probably still is illegal on the federal side (EPA, NHTSA, DOT), but then why would they sell it?

God I wish those were sold here. I would so buy one if I could afford a new car

VW should sell them here. They’re probably made in Mexico, so no chicken tax. And doesn’t VW want to enter the US pickup market?

Not made in Mexico. Most are made in Argentina, while this one was made in Germany... Though I’d love to see them sold here, perhaps even with a more powerful engine!

Oh wow cool! I didn’t know they made any in Germany, I thought the Amarok was a Latin America exclusive.

Nope. Not even going to fit a US plate.

Why sell it if it’s not legal? So they can confiscate it again and sell it again. Typical Illinois politics...

But Mexican plates look like they have similar dimensions to US and Canadian plates.

This is one of my favorite trucks ever. If it was offered here I would trade in my car just to have one.

What I want to know is, who the hell bought it? They had to know it’s illegal.

It’s not just Illinois, it’s how those stupid auctions typically work. A few years ago, there was a smart forfour (the old one) for sale by the Insurance Auto Auctions.
Car got into a very light fender bender (probably only $500 of work was needed) but was otherwise complete. The kicker was that the car’s VIN read as “2005 smart fortwo”, which is legal for importation. And the header for the auction even said 2005 smart fortwo when the car clearly wasn’t a fortwo.
The weird thing is that the US government doesn’t seem to care too much about people swapping VIN plates on their smarts. There are roughly 3 smart crossblades, 3-4 smart roadsters, and several smart fortwo cdi models rolling around, most of them wearing VINs from import worthy smarts.
